Rev. Dr. Mark Hoehner

Pastor Mark grew up primarily in Wisconsin and Michigan and is an avid Detroit Tigers and Michigan Wolverines fan. He received his undergraduate degree from Concordia-Wisconsin in 1996. He received his Masters of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., in 2000, and then his doctorate in Old Testament studies also from Concordia in 2011. Pastor Mark began serving Chapel of the Cross in October 2002 as an interim preacher. On July 6, 2003 he was ordained our Pastor.

In 2001 he and his wife, Erin, were married. They and their three sons, Micah (2003), Isaiah (2005), and Asher (2007), currently live in St. Charles. Erin graduated from Concordia-Chicago in 1997 and teaches at Zion Lutheran Preschool in Harvester.

“I enjoy spending time with my family, coaching our kids’ baseball and basketball teams, reading my Bible with a good cup of coffee, and working on my ‘Knowing God Knowing Me’ series, which helps the reader to see that all of the Bible is really about Jesus and His love for you.”

James Uglum

Pastor James grew up in Michigan and Indiana. He graduated from Concordia-Chicago in 2003, as a Director of Christian Education. He served as the Director of Youth and Family Ministry for Cheshire Lutheran Church in Connecticut. In 2006 he and his wife, Jaime, were married and moved to St. Louis where he began studies at Concordia Seminary. He served as a youth worker/vicar here at Chapel of the Cross until he graduated from Seminary in May 2010. He was called to serve as our Associate Pastor in August 2010.

Pastor James and Jaime have three children: Mackenzie (2008), Jonah (2011), and Gabriella (2014). Jaime currently is a physical therapist in St. Louis.

“I enjoy almost any outdoor activity, but I spend most of my free time hanging out with my family and training to run races. If you’re looking to learn about Jesus and grow in your faith, or just to add a few miles to your weekly runs, I’m your guy.”

Rev. Dr. Robert Hoehner

Pastor Bob is a graduate of Concordia College, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo. (1972). Following his graduation from the Seminary, he served congregations in Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. He also served as a South Wisconsin District Executive for Missions and at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. In December 2010, he was honored to receive a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Concordia University-Wisconsin. He was called as an associate pastor to Chapel of the Cross in 2012.

Pastor Hoehner and his wife, Susan, were married in 1968. Susan is a registered nurse and has served the church in a variety of roles. They have been blessed with three children and nine grandchildren. They currently live in St. Peters.

“I enjoy watching our grandchildren participate in school and sports activities. I am a Cardinals fan, but I also keep an eye on the Brewers, Tiger, Lions, Packers, Badgers, and Wolverines. I enjoy playing golf and taking walks with my wife.”

Andrew Nelson

Director Family Life
Andrew has lived in the Midwest his entire life. He graduated from Concordia University-Nebraska in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and received his synodical certification (Director of Christian Education) in 2009. He is currently working toward a Master of Arts in Theology degree through Concordia University Irvine. He served as DCE at Messiah Lutheran Church (Sterling, Ill.) from 2009–2012 before joining the staff at Chapel of the Cross in August of 2012. His primary roles are directing youth ministry and working with families through intergenerational education and children’s ministry.

In 2009 Andrew and his wife, Laura, were married. They live in St. Charles with their two beautiful daughters, Adley (2015) and Noelle (2016). Laura currently works as a nurse in St. Louis.

George Nelson

Director of Music
George was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wis., graduating from Milwaukee Lutheran High in 1966. After studying at Concordia-Wisconsin and Concordia-Nebraska, he graduated as a Director of Christian Education (1971). George has served a number of parishes in Minnesota, Missouri, and Kansas for the last 45+ years. George came to Chapel of the Cross in 2016 to serve as Director of Music.

George married Jeannie in 1980 and they have two sons: Michael, who is a Lutheran High School teacher in Carson City, Nev., and Andrew, who serves as DCE here at Chapel. They currently live in St. Charles. Jeannie takes care of their granddaughters, Adley and Noelle. “Unlike the rest of the staff, I do NOT run for anything! I enjoy substitute teaching at Lutheran High and am an avid Green Bay Packer fan in my spare time.”

Andrea Weiss

Preschool Director
Andrea Weiss calls the beautiful state of Michigan home and continues to follow Big 10 football and basketball. In 2012, she graduated from Concordia-Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Special Education.

She served as the full day kindergarten teacher at St. Paul’s, Des Peres, Mo., following her graduation. She also enjoyed the role of Director of Admissions there for the 2016–2017 school year. In 2016 she received her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Concordia-Portland. She was called as the Preschool Director at Chapel of the Cross in 2017. “I am an avid runner and St. Louis Cardinals fan, and I love visiting family and friends in Michigan!”

Erin Hoehner

Preschool Teacher
Erin was born and raised in St. Charles. She graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education from Concordia Chicago in 1997. She served as a 1st grade teacher at St.James Lutheran in Quincy, Illinois for 2 years before returning to St. Charles to teach 3rd grade at Zion Lutheran. She took a break from teaching when her boys were young and then resumed teaching as a preschool teacher at Zion. Erin and her husband Mark have 3 sons- Micah, Isaiah, and Asher who are active in sports. She spends a lot of her free time watching them play basketball and baseball. She is also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. She enjoys playing games and spending time with her family.

Bev Piehl

Bev has been a part of the office staff at Chapel of the Cross since July of 2000. She is originally from St. Louis, but did spend 12 years in Texas before returning to the Midwest. She has two older sisters (one who lives in St. Louis and the other who lives in Texas) and one younger brother who lives in Central Illinois. Bev and her husband, Rich, have been married since 1993. “For vacations, we enjoy jumping in the car and driving across the country. We have been to every region except the Northwestern United States and have also driven across Canada as far north as Fort St. John, BC, then back south down the Icefields Parkway. In my spare time, I enjoy solving crosswords, reading books, and embroidering counted cross-stitch.”

Ellen Krull

Ellen Krull has worked as an Administrative Assistant at Chapel of the Cross since 2012 and as a Wedding Coordinator since 2007. Ellen grew up in South St. Louis County, attending Peace Lutheran Church. Ellen has a Psychology degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Ellen also works for the St. Charles City County Library District at the Middendorf-Kreddell Branch in O'Fallon.

Ellen and her husband, Larry, have been members of Chapel since 1996 when they moved back to the St. Louis area. Their son, Kyle (23), is a civil engineer, and their daughter, Katie (19), is a college student.

"I enjoy being with my family and friends. I enjoy cooking, reading, walking/hiking, traveling, music, design, gardening, and living the life God has given me."

Lisa Borchert

Communication Director
Lisa was born and raised in Michigan. She graduated from Central Michigan University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Interpersonal and Public Communication and Environmental Studies. She has worked with AmeriCorps, the University of North Texas, Sylvan Learning Centers, and the Baton Rouge Zoo on the way here. In addition to joining the Chapel staff in 2018, she does contract work as an editor for the LCMS Communications Office and several authors and as an educator in standardized test preparation.

Mark and Lisa were married in January of 2006. They live in St. Charles with their two sons, Matthew (2007) and Josiah (2011). Mark works with Concordia Plan Services.
